𝑂𝑢𝑟 ℎ𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑠 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑛𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 be a tool for politicians to spend our money without any regard for those they're affecting, but that's exactly what's happening across the state of Kansas. Property taxes have become a burden that continuously threatens our homes and livelihoods, affecting countless families who are struggling to make ends meet – while state and municipal governments engage in giveaways, and wasteful and redundant spending.
𝐼𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑑𝑖𝑑𝑛'𝑡 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑜𝑢𝑟 ℎ𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑡𝑎𝑥 𝑢𝑠 𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑜𝑓, they would never be able to afford the tax breaks they're so quick to pass out to the elites and their lobbyists. Our homes are literally bankrolling their giveaways!
🌻Tʜᴇ Sᴏʟᴜᴛɪᴏɴ:
𝐴 𝑢𝑠𝑒/𝑠𝑎𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑡𝑎𝑥 puts the power back into the hands of The People. You can plan your purchases, rather than your government planning your tax increases. You can have your needs while your government goes without their wants. They'll finally be the ones forced to sink or swim instead of drowning us!
𝑆𝑤𝑖𝑡𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚 of taxation will make governments across the state more accountable. When local and state governments control the narrative, they have no incentive to budget responsibly. When consumers control the narrative, governments will have nothing but incentive to budget responsibly. And we must control the narrative in order to put government back in its proper role.
𝑀𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑝𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 by the state to provide basic services, such as fire and police, so don't let the "sky-is-falling" opponents tell you otherwise. These basic services will be funded first and foremost.
𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑝𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑛𝑜𝑡 mandated to do is give tens of millions away to nonprofits and make deals with developers and their lawyers. They're not mandated to give employees credit cards with little oversight, or give our tax money away while raising 𝗼𝘂𝗿 taxes yet again!
𝑂𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑜 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑖𝑚 this will hurt the poor, but our poor homeowners are already hurting and losing their homes! A nominal use/sales tax will allow a widow or single mother of one or two children to pay for their own services instead of paying the same amount as the family of six next door.
𝑅𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠, 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑜 𝑝𝑎𝑦 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑦 𝑡𝑎𝑥𝑒𝑠 𝑣𝑖𝑎 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡. If landlords are no longer charged property tax, rents should drop across the state.
🌻Tʜᴇ Bɪʟʟ Fᴏʀᴍᴇʀʟʏ Kɴᴏᴡɴ ᴀs SB488:
𝑊ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑒 𝑆𝐵488 never made it to the floor for a vote, it was the spark and inspiration for this movement. While some consider it dead, the idea behind this bill is still 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒎𝒖𝒄𝒉 alive in the hearts of struggling Kansans.
𝑂𝑢𝑟 𝑔𝑜𝑎𝑙 is to rally the entire state of Kansas and stand with the sponsor, Kansas State Senator Mike Murphy, on a bill similar to SB488 that would abolish all Kansas state and local property taxes and replace them with a use/sales tax. While SB488 was written to exempt most groceries, gasoline/fuel, utilities, and prescription medication, it created a higher tax and, as many noted, an unfairly tiered system.
𝑀𝑎𝑛𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑢𝑠 feel a nominal 1%–2% sales tax across the board would be the perfect solution. This would not send anyone across state lines, and EBT recipients are automatically tax exempt on groceries.
𝐴 𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑢𝑠𝑒/𝑠𝑎𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑡𝑎𝑥 that everyone pays, combined with true fiscal responsibility and an end to government giveaways, would free our homes from being held hostage to a bloated, unjust system that favors anyone who can "pay to play."
𝐴𝑠 𝑤𝑒 𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑖𝑡 𝑎 𝑛𝑒𝑤 𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑙, we are here building our own team to make sure this needed change is not forgotten. While data is being collected and numbers are being crunched, this group boldly stands for the abolition of property taxes, and we encourage anyone to share their ideas on how they would make it a reality.
Let's work together to 𝕤𝕒𝕧𝕖 𝕠𝕦𝕣 𝕙𝕠𝕞𝕖𝕤! 🏠

Here is a discussion between Tatum Lee hahn and Senator Murphy regarding SB488
Why We Exist
The Kansas Property Tax Freedom Coalition was formed by Kansans who believe property taxes, as they currently stand, place an unfair and growing burden on homeowners, farmers, and retirees across the state. Rising valuations and rate increases mean that even Kansans who have paid off their homes can still lose them over an unpaid tax bill.
We're organizing to educate the public, support local advocacy, and push for abolishing all forms of real estate property tax altogether.”
What We Believe
Homeownership Should Be Secure
No Kansan should be at risk of losing their home simply because they can't keep up with rising property tax bills.
Transparency Matters
Kansans deserve to understand exactly how their property is assessed and where their tax dollars go.
Local Voices, Statewide Change
Real reform starts with organized communities. That's why we're building chapters across every corner of Kansas.
